Phillips, Paul Jr.
December 16th, 1922 - March 28th, 2002
Veterinarian
Paul Phillips Jr. was the son of Paul Phillips Sr., who was a well-known veterinarian in Gillespie County for many decades. After serving in the Philippines during WWII, Paul Jr. was one of the pioneers who built the Tuskeegee Institute of Veterinary Medicine, part of what is now known as the historically black Tuskeegee University of Alabama. After obtaining his degree and vet license, Paul Jr. returned to Fredericksburg and served the community together with his father. His wife Thelma became the main librarian of the county in the 1960s. Paul Jr. was not the last Phillips to contribute to the fabric of Fredericksburg: his son Paul Phillips III returned to Fredericksburg as an orthopedic surgeon after serving in the army as well. Listen to Paul Jr.'s daughter, Paula, and son, Paul III, tell their father's story.
